What Kind of Area is Satsuma-Sendai? A Local’s Honest Take

Satsuma-Sendai — its station simply signed “Sendai,” though it is a different place entirely from the famous Sendai in Tohoku — is a city in northwestern Kagoshima where the broad Sendai River reaches the East China Sea. It is a workaday regional city rather than a tourist town, but it serves as the mainland gateway to the Koshikijima islands, a rugged, little-visited chain of dramatic cliffs, fossils and fishing villages out in the sea, now linked by a striking long bridge.

Tsubame services stop here, with some Sakura, about 80 minutes from Hakata and just 12 from Kagoshima. For most travelers Satsuma-Sendai is a place to pass through or to catch a boat; those who linger find quiet river-and-coast scenery and a genuine slice of rural Satsuma life.

The Koshikijima islands reward the effort to reach them: sea cliffs, the famous Napoleon Rock formation, dinosaur-era fossils and some of the freshest seafood in Kagoshima, all with barely another tourist in sight.
