What Kind of Area is Izumi? A Local’s Honest Take
Izumi, in northern Kagoshima, holds two quietly remarkable draws. Each winter, more than ten thousand cranes โ the great majority of the world’s hooded and white-naped cranes โ migrate here to feed on the reclaimed farmland, making Izumi the largest crane-wintering site in Japan and a place of pilgrimage for birdwatchers. And in town, the Izumi Fumoto district preserves one of Kyushu’s finest samurai residence quarters: stone-walled lanes, hedged gardens and old warrior houses you can visit.
Sakura and Tsubame services stop here, about 70 minutes from Hakata and 20 from Kagoshima. It is a rewarding, low-key stop โ especially from November to February for the cranes โ and an easy, atmospheric detour on the way south.
Come at dawn on a winter morning to the crane observation centre: thousands of cranes lifting off against the pale sky, calling as they go, is one of Japan’s great wildlife spectacles โ and almost unknown to foreign visitors.
