White Water Rafting in Japan:
Yoshino River, Hozu & More

Japan’s Steep Geography + Heavy Rainfall = Asia’s Best Rafting Rivers

🌊 Yoshino River — Japan’s top Class III–IV rapids

🏯 Hozu River — through Kyoto’s mountain gorge

💎 Niyodo — Japan’s clearest river (Niyodo Blue)

🐟 Shimanto — Japan’s last undammed clear river

🥇 Yoshino River (吉野川) — Shikoku’s “Raging River”

Kochi/Tokushima, Shikoku · Class III–IV · ¥7,000–¥12,000 · Mar–Nov · 1.5 hrs from Kochi City by car

Japan’s premier white water destination. Known as “Shikoku Saburo” — one of Japan’s three great rivers. The Oboke Gorge section is the centerpiece: a dramatic limestone canyon where the river has cut through ancient metamorphic rock to produce walls of extraordinary color (cream, grey, green, ochre) rising above emerald rapids.

Koboke section: Class III, families and beginners. Oboke section: Class III–IV, the classic experience. Upper Yoshino: Class IV–V, experienced rafters only.

🏯 Hozu River (保津川) — Through Kyoto’s Mountains

Kameoka to Arashiyama, Kyoto · Class II–III · ¥4,100 (boat ride) / ~¥6,000 rafting · Mar–Nov · 20 min from Kyoto to Kameoka

The traditional Hozu River boat ride — flat-bottomed wooden boats steered by trained rivermen since the 16th century — descends through a beautiful gorge to Arashiyama. Class II–III rapids provide genuine excitement while the Kyoto mountain scenery is extraordinary. Also available: conventional inflatable raft trips taking a more adventurous line.

💧 Tenryu River (天竜川) — The Dragon River

Shizuoka/Nagano · Class II–III · ¥4,500–¥8,000 · Apr–Oct · 2 hrs from Nagoya

Scenic Class II–III through forested Tenryu Gorge. Primarily recreational rather than technical — excellent for families and those wanting the river experience without extreme adrenaline. The traditional Edo-period wooden boat journey also operates on the same river.

💎 Niyodo River (仁淀川) — Japan’s Clearest Water

Kochi, Shikoku · Class I–III · ¥6,000–¥10,000 · Apr–Oct · 1 hr from Kochi by car

Ranked Japan’s clearest river for multiple consecutive years. The “Niyodo Blue” — a vivid, almost surreal blue-green that photographs consistently underrepresent — must be seen in person. Rafting combines the visual experience with Class II–III rapids through forested gorges.

🌿 Shimanto River (四万十川) — Japan’s Last Clear River

Kochi, Shikoku · Class I–II · ¥4,000–¥8,000 · May–Sept · 2 hrs from Kochi by car

Japan’s last major undammed river — its extraordinary water clarity has all but disappeared from other Japanese river systems. Not a white water destination but ideal for canoe touring and kayaking through agricultural landscape. The famous chinkabashi (submersible bridges without railings) are unique to this river.
