Paragliding in Japan: 8 Places
to Fly Over Rice Fields & Volcanoes

No Experience Required · Tandem Flights Available at All Sites · Unforgettable Japanese Landscape Views

🏔️ Hakuba — Northern Alps panorama

🌋 Aso — fly over an active volcano caldera

🗻 Shizuoka — Mt. Fuji directly ahead

🌾 Niigata — Japan’s finest rice fields from above

The Sky Above Japan

From 500 meters above a Nagano valley, Japan looks like a painting: terraced rice fields in geometric patterns, dark cedar forests on mountain slopes, a thin river catching light between paddies, tiled farmhouse roofs in clusters, and beyond everything, higher mountains against a pale blue sky. Paragliding offers this perspective — the silence of the air, the physical sensation of wind, and the extraordinary clarity of seeing Japan from above.

Unlike many countries where paragliding takes place in industrial zones, Japan’s sites are almost invariably set within landscapes of great natural beauty. And tandem flights — where an instructor controls the glider entirely — require no experience whatsoever.

🌋 Highlight: Aso Caldera — Fly Over an Active Volcano

Mount Aso is one of the world’s largest calderas. Launch from the caldera rim and glide over the vast inner plain with the central volcanic craters emitting white plume below and to one side. On clear days, the full 128km circumference of the caldera rim is visible. Geological scale rarely experienced from any angle — from the air it is overwhelming.

🗻 Highlight: Shizuoka — Mt. Fuji Directly Ahead

Several operators above Shizuoka and Numazu offer flights with Mt. Fuji as the direct visual target — launch from coastal hills with Fuji rising behind and the Pacific Ocean below. This may be the most iconic Japanese panorama available from the air.

Tandem vs. Solo Flying

Tandem flights (no experience required): An instructor is strapped to your back and controls the glider entirely. 10–20 minutes air time. Appropriate for all first-time visitors. Solo courses: 3–7 day commitment to learn basics. Available at all sites for those genuinely interested in learning.
