Introduction: The Osaka That Tourism Forgot

Tennoji (天王寺) and Abeno (阿倍野) — adjacent districts in the southern part of central Osaka — represent a version of the city that international tourism has almost entirely overlooked. While Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi attract the crowds, this area maintains the character of a functioning urban neighborhood: Japan's oldest zoo, the country's second-tallest skyscraper, a traditional Buddhist temple complex, the best-preserved prewar residential streets in Osaka, and a local life so unhurried and genuine that spending an afternoon here feels like visiting a different city from the neon-lit entertainment center two kilometers north.

Shitennoji (四天王寺): Japan's Oldest Buddhist Temple

Shitennoji was founded in 593 CE by Prince Shotoku (聖徳太子) — the architect of Japan's early embrace of Buddhism as a state religion — making it one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan and the oldest in Osaka. The temple complex was almost completely destroyed by repeated fires and wartime bombing, and the current buildings (1960s reconstruction in the original style) have less historical atmosphere than Kyoto's temples, but the Central Gateway (中門), Five-Story Pagoda (五重塔), Lecture Hall (講堂), and Inner Garden (石舞台) are laid out in the original 6th-century configuration — a direct line to Japan's earliest Buddhist temple architecture.

The Garden (極楽浄土の庭): The rear garden (¥300 entry) represents the Western Paradise (Pure Land) of the Amida Buddha — a pond garden with islands and bridges that is one of central Osaka's quietest and most reflective spaces.

Flea market: On the 21st and 22nd of each month, the temple grounds host one of Osaka's most active flea markets — hundreds of stalls selling antiques, clothing, tools, plants, and food. The 21st (Shotoku's day of death) is the larger of the two.

Tennoji Zoo (天王寺動物園): Japan's Third-Oldest

Tennoji Zoo (天王寺動物園) opened in 1915 — making it Japan's third-oldest zoo after Ueno (Tokyo) and Higashiyama (Nagoya). The zoo covers 11 hectares within Tennoji Park and houses approximately 1,000 animals representing 200 species.

The zoo is genuinely good — well-maintained, with several large naturalistic enclosures for the major animals, and entry at approximately ¥500 (adult) making it exceptional value. The African savanna section and the Nocturnarium (夜行性動物館) are particularly well-regarded.

Abeno Harukas (あべのハルカス): Japan's Second-Tallest Building

Abeno Harukas — the 300-meter skyscraper completed in 2014 in the Abeno district — is Japan's second-tallest building and contains, on its 58th to 60th floors, the Harukas 300 observation deck. The view from this height encompasses the full Osaka urban area — on clear days extending to Kyoto to the northeast, the Kii Peninsula mountains to the south, and the Akashi Strait and Awaji Island to the southwest.

The observation deck (entry: ¥2,000) is significantly less crowded than Umeda Sky Building or Tokyo's popular observation decks — a consequence of Abeno's position outside the main tourist corridor — which means the experience of the view is less compromised by other people.

Shotengai and Local Life: Abeno's Commercial Streets

The shopping arcades around Tennoji and Abeno Stations — particularly Abeno Q's Mall and the network of covered shotengai extending south — represent the commercial infrastructure of a genuine residential neighborhood rather than a tourist district. The shops (pharmacies, supermarkets, local restaurants, 100-yen stores) and the people using them (families, elderly residents, schoolchildren) provide a view of Osaka daily life unavailable in Dotonbori.

The Abeno Shotengai (天下茶屋商店街) district, slightly south of the main Tennoji area, contains some of Osaka's finest surviving prewar shotengai architecture — covered arcades with their original 1930s-era metal-and-glass roofs and storefronts — and the social texture of a working neighborhood that has changed less than most of the city.
