📸 Chureito Pagoda — The Most Famous Fuji Photograph

A five-story pagoda in Fujiyoshida city with Fuji rising behind it. The view from the top of the 398-step approach staircase on a clear morning — with cherry blossom (late April) or autumn color surrounding the pagoda — is extraordinary. From Shinjuku: JR Chūō Line to Ōtsuki → Fujikyūkō Line to Shimoyoshida → 10 min walk.

🌊 Lake Kawaguchiko

Most accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes — lakeside walks, boat rentals, Fuji reflection photography. Best in still morning conditions. From Shinjuku: direct highway bus ~1hr 45min (about ¥2,200) or JR Fuji Excursion limited express ~1hr 55min.

💧 Oshino Hakkai

Eight spring pools fed by Fuji snowmelt — the largest 9 meters deep with visibility to the bottom. Traditional thatched farmhouses, less developed than the lakeside resorts. 20 min by bus from Kawaguchiko.

First visit or limited time: Day trip focusing on Chureito Pagoda + Kawaguchiko provides satisfying iconic views. Photography or deeper experience: Overnight stay strongly recommended — even a single night dramatically expands what is accessible. Ideal visit: Two nights — one at Kawaguchiko (north view), one at Motosuko (western sunset view).
