What Kind of Area is Shichinohe-Towada? A Local’s Honest Take
Shichinohe-Towada is the newest of the line’s rural halts (2010) and follows the familiar grammar: a handsome station, a michi-no-eki with excellent local produce next door, a large car park, and fields. Shichinohe town itself is old Nambu horse country — the shogunate’s warhorses were raised on these plains, a heritage the autumn Shichinohe horse festivals still honor.
For travelers, the station’s real function is as a side door to Towada city — whose Towada Art Center is one of rural Japan’s best contemporary museums — and, beyond it, the Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada. Being honest as ever: the bus links work, but if the lake-and-gorge country is your goal, plan your nights out there or in a proper city; the station area offers little after dark.
The art run: morning Hayabusa in, 10am bus to Towada Art Center (Ron Mueck’s giant standing woman alone justifies it), soba lunch on the museum’s arts-street block, afternoon bus onward to Oirase Gorge — walk the stream before the light goes. Sleep at the lake.
