What Kind of Area is Morioka? A Local’s Honest Take
When the New York Times named Morioka one of its places to go in 2023 — above cities fifty times more famous — locals were as surprised as anyone, and then, on reflection, not surprised at all. Morioka is what Japanese cities were before they optimized for tourism: riverside walks under Mt. Iwate’s volcano cone, Taisho-era banks and coffee shops that never closed, sake bars with no English menu and no hostility either, and a food culture — the three great noodles of wanko soba, jajamen and reimen — that exists for residents, priced accordingly.
Logistically it’s the north’s second hub: Hayabusa and Komachi separate here (the platform ballet again), the Akita Shinkansen heads for samurai Kakunodate and Lake Tazawa, and buses climb to the Hachimantai plateau’s onsen and snow.
Jajamen initiation at a counter like Pairon: miso-and-cucumber noodles first, mixed violently; then — crucial — crack the raw egg into your emptied bowl and hand it back for chiitantan, the broth finale. Order “chii-tan” like you’ve done it before.

Sightseeing Near Morioka
🏔️ The Riverside & Mt. Iwate
The Kitakami and Nakatsu rivers thread the center; the classic view pairs the Iwate Bank’s red-brick 1911 headquarters (Tokyo Station’s architect) with the volcano floating beyond. In spring, the Ishiwarizakura — a 360-year-old cherry splitting a granite boulder outside the courthouse — makes national news simply by blooming.
⛩️ Zaimokucho & the Craft Streets
Nambu ironware galleries (Kamasada’s minimalist kettles), the Konya-cho dye shops, and Kogensha’s bookshop courtyard — founded to publish Miyazawa Kenji — where the city’s understated cool concentrates.
🍜 The Noodle Trinity
Wanko soba’s bowl-after-bowl theater (Azumaya), jajamen (Pairon), and Morioka reimen’s chewy chilled nirvana (Pyonpyonsha) — do all three; the town is walkable enough to earn them.
🐎 Koiwai Farm & Hachimantai
The one-tree-in-a-field photograph with Mt. Iwate behind is Koiwai’s; beyond it the Hachimantai aspite road climbs to marshland trails and steaming mountain baths. See our Towada-Hachimantai guide.
