What Kind of Area is Itoigawa? A Local’s Honest Take
Itoigawa is a rugged little coast city on the Sea of Japan where geology becomes tourism. It sits astride the Fossa Magna — the great fault line that splits Japan — and it is the country’s historic source of jade, prized since the Jomon era; you can still find waterworn jade pebbles on its beaches. Recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark, it offers dramatic gorges, the fearsome Oyashirazu cliffs where the old road clung between mountain and surf, and fresh Sea-of-Japan seafood.
Hakutaka services stop here, with Tokyo about two hours away. It is a niche but genuinely distinctive stop — and, usefully, a quiet back-door route to the Hakuba ski valley via the local Oito line. Most travelers who alight are here for the geology, the jade, or the coast.
Wander Hisui Beach with your eyes down: among the grey shingle, the pale green glow of a genuine jade pebble is a real possibility — a treasure hunt on a wild, windswept shore.
