What Kind of Area is Kurobe-Unazuki-Onsen? A Local’s Honest Take

This long-named station has a single clear purpose: it is the shinkansen door to the Kurobe Gorge and Unazuki Onsen. The gorge is one of the deepest in Japan, explored aboard a much-loved open-sided “torokko” sightseeing train that trundles along the Kurobe River past ravines, dams and secret riverside baths. Unazuki, at the gorge’s mouth, is Toyama’s leading hot-spring resort, its inns fed by clear, gentle waters piped down from the mountains.

Hakutaka services stop here (the Kagayaki does not), about 130 minutes from Tokyo. From the shinkansen station you transfer to the local Toyama Chiho railway up to Unazuki, where the torokko journey begins. It is a gateway station — you come to ride the gorge and soak, not to linger by the tracks.

Ride the torokko train in mid-autumn, when the gorge walls turn scarlet and gold and mist rises off the emerald river. Bring a jacket — the open carriages are cold in the shade of the ravines even when the valley below is warm.
