What Kind of Area is Chikugo-Funagoya? A Local’s Honest Take

Chikugo-Funagoya is a quiet station on the Chikugo River plain of southern Fukuoka, built mainly to serve the local area and as a convenient gateway to Yame — a name revered by tea lovers. The hills of Yame produce some of Japan’s finest gyokuro, the shaded, intensely sweet green tea that regularly tops national competitions, and the town also makes traditional Buddhist altars, stone lanterns and paper lanterns (bon-chochin).

Tsubame services stop here, with some Sakura, about 20 minutes from Hakata. There is little at the station itself — it is a rural stop — but for anyone serious about Japanese tea, the Yame tea country beyond it is a genuine highlight, best explored by car or local bus.

Yame gyokuro is tea taken to its most refined extreme — grown under shade, hand-picked, and brewed at low temperatures to release an almost broth-like sweetness. A tasting at a Yame tea house is a revelation for anyone who thinks they know green tea.
