Kokura is the first shinkansen stop on Kyushu — the gateway to Kitakyushu, the industrial city that guards the island’s northern tip. It is a practical, friendly place, often overlooked in the rush to Hakata, but it has real appeal: a handsome castle in the city centre, the wonderfully old-fashioned Tanga Market for street food, and, a short ride away, the Mojiko Retro district of restored Meiji and Taisho port buildings on the Kanmon Strait. It is also a transport pivot — where the Sanyo Shinkansen meets the lines running down Kyushu’s east coast to Beppu and Oita.
Every Nozomi and Mizuho stops at Kokura, two hours from Shin-Osaka and just 15 minutes from Hakata. That makes it an easy, cheaper-than-Fukuoka base for northern Kyushu, with the castle, market and retro port all close at hand.
Kokura was the original target for the second atomic bomb in 1945; cloud cover spared it, and the aircraft diverted to Nagasaki. The city carries that sobering history quietly beneath its cheerful, everyday bustle.
