🌹 A “Rose City” with a famous rose park and festival

What Kind of Area is Fukuyama? A Local’s Honest Take

Fukuyama is an industrial city in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture with one delightful quirk: its castle stands right beside the shinkansen platform, so close you can almost touch it from the train. Beyond the castle, the city is best known as the gateway to Tomonoura — a beautifully preserved Edo-era harbour town on the Inland Sea, so atmospheric it inspired the setting of Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo and featured in The Wolverine. Fukuyama also calls itself a “Rose City,” with a large rose park and a spring festival.

Hikari, Sakura and some Nozomi stop here, an hour from Shin-Osaka. The city itself is workmanlike, but the castle-by-the-tracks and the magic of Tomonoura make it a worthwhile stop — especially for anyone who loves old ports and slow harbour afternoons.

Take the bus down to Tomonoura and climb to the Fukuzenji temple hall, whose open room frames the islands of the Inland Sea like a living painting — a view praised by envoys centuries ago and unchanged since.
