Japanese Supermarket Souvenirs —
Dashi, Curry Roux & the Pantry Haul Serious Cooks Bring Home
Why the Supermarket Beats the Gift Shop · The Pantry List · Label-Reading Basics
The Best Souvenir Shop Has Shopping Carts
Gift shops sell Japan’s image; supermarkets sell its kitchen. For anyone who cooks, thirty minutes in a Life, Ito-Yokado or OK Store yields the most-used souvenirs of the entire trip — at prices that feel like typos after the omiyage halls. Locals’ secret: this is where Japanese people buy their travel gifts for cooking friends.
The Pantry List
Dashi packets — tea-bag-style bonito/kombu stock (Kayanoya is the luxury standard; supermarket house brands are 80% as good at 30% the price). The single most life-improving item on this page.
Curry roux — Golden Curry, Java, Vermont; the blocks that make Japanese home curry. Check meat-import rules for your country — most roux is fine, some contain meat extract (Australia cares; see the customs guide).
Furikake — rice seasoning in twenty varieties; noritama and shiso are the gateway. Ochazuke sachets for the tea-over-rice habit.
Real soy sauce & ponzu — small bottles of marudaizu shoyu or yuzu ponzu outclass anything exported. Yuzu kosho — the citrus-chili paste that improves everything it touches. Shichimi from a proper house (Yawataya Isogoro tins).
Instant ramen, elevated — regional bag ramen (Sapporo Ichiban miso, Marutai’s Kyushu straight noodles) beats the cup versions for packing and quality.
Sesame everything — golden neri-goma paste and toasted sesame dressing, the bottle every visitor regrets not buying more of.
Label-Reading in 30 Seconds
賞味期限 = best-by date. 農 marks meat-containing lines in curry/ramen — when unsure, photo-translate the ingredients. Glass travels badly; choose pouches and tins where options exist.
Where to Go
Any full-size suburban supermarket beats tourist-district mini-marts; OK Store and Gyomu Super for prices, depachika basements for the luxury versions of the same list (see the depachika guide).
