🏙️ Atami — Gateway Onsen City

Japan’s most fashionable resort city 1950s–1980s, now revived with younger travelers. MOA Museum of Art on a hilltop with Pacific views (National Treasures collection). Multiple day-use onsen facilities with geothermal springs over 100°C.

🎋 Shuzenji — Mountain Onsen Village

Deep in the Izu mountains: Shuzenji Temple (founded by Kūkai, 807 CE), Katsura River flowing through the center, traditional inns on both banks. The Tokko no Yu spring, on a rock in mid-river, is said to have been discovered by Kūkai himself (viewing only today — free foot baths sit nearby). Natsume Sōseki and Kawabata Yasunari wrote here.

Breathtaking view of the coastline in Nishi-Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Perfect for nature and travel enthusiasts.

⚓ Shimoda — Black Ships & Black Sand

Where Commodore Perry arrived in 1854 forcing Japan to open after 250 years of isolation. Ryosenji Temple preserves treaty documentation. Shirahama Beach — rare white sand on the usually black-sand Pacific coast — is among the finest beaches in the greater Tokyo region.

🐟 Kinmedai & Fresh Wasabi

Izu’s signature fish — splendid alfonsino, a deep-red deep-water fish on every menu. Eating freshly grated real wasabi alongside Izu sashimi (not the powder substitute) is a revelation only available this close to the wasabi-producing mountain rivers.

Hotels: Yukairo Kikuya (湯回廊 菊屋) (Luxury / from approx. ¥40,000/person ~$267 USD) — finest Shuzenji ryokan. Atami Kaihourou (Mid-Range / from approx. ¥22,000/person ~$147 USD) — sea views. Prices approximate with two meals.
