What Kind of Area is Mito? A Local’s Honest Take
Mito was one of the three most important castle towns in Edo-period Japan — seat of the Mito Tokugawa, the branch family whose scholars practically invented modern Japanese nationalism and whose lord, Nariaki, left the city its two treasures. Kairakuen, his “garden to be enjoyed together,” ranks with Kanazawa’s Kenrokuen and Okayama’s Korakuen among the Three Great Gardens of Japan: three thousand plum trees in a hundred varieties, at their scented peak from late February through March, when the Mito Plum Festival draws the whole Kanto plain. The Kodokan, his clan school, taught everything from swordsmanship to astronomy and still stands by the station, serene and severe.
Modern Mito is Ibaraki’s no-nonsense capital: a working downtown between the station and the government hill, Lake Senba’s swan-flecked loop for morning runs, and the striking Art Tower Mito arts complex. And there is the small matter of natto — Mito is Japan’s fermented-soybean heartland, and locals will insist you at least try it fresh, in straw, from a specialist shop rather than a supermarket pack.
Hotels cluster conveniently at the station, and the Hitachi express makes Tokyo about 75 minutes away — easy as an overnight, richer as two.
During plum season, walk Kairakuen at opening time, then cross to the Kobuntei villa: its third-floor room frames the entire garden, Lake Senba and the blossom haze in one view Nariaki designed personally. February Mito smells like spring arriving early.
