What Kind of Area is Hamamatsucho? A Local’s Honest Take
When travelers arrive at Haneda Airport and take the Tokyo Monorail into the city, the terminal station is Hamamatsucho. For many international visitors, this makes Hamamatsucho their literal first encounter with Tokyo — and, consistently, the view that greets them on that first monorail approach is one of the city’s most cinematic.
As a Tokyo native, I think of Hamamatsucho as a compressed version of the city itself. Modern office towers line the waterfront. Five minutes’ walk inland, the ancient Buddhist temple of Zojoji — mausoleum of the Tokugawa shogunate — spreads across carefully maintained grounds. Behind it, in a composition that has become one of Tokyo’s most recognized images worldwide, Tokyo Tower rises in bright vermilion, its Showa-era exuberance completely at odds with the temple’s Edo-period solemnity, and somehow made more beautiful for that contrast.
Walking from Zojoji’s main gate toward the back of the temple grounds and then turning to look — the moment Tokyo Tower frames itself between the ancient structures behind you — is one of those Tokyo experiences that stops you mid-step. It’s worth arriving at the temple for that view alone.

The Tokyo Monorail departs directly from Hamamatsucho and reaches Haneda International Terminal (Terminal 3) in approximately 17 minutes. No transfer required. For early departures and late arrivals with heavy luggage, this is as convenient as Tokyo gets.

About 7 minutes on foot from the station. The Tokugawa shogunate’s family temple — where multiple shoguns are interred — is one of the most historically significant temple sites in eastern Japan. The great San-gedatsu-mon gate dates to 1622 and is a designated Important Cultural Property. The composition from inside the grounds, looking back through the gate toward Tokyo Tower, is one of the most compelling visual experiences in the city: 400 years of history framing 60 years of modernity.
