What Kind of Area is Asa? A Local’s Honest Take
Let’s be honest: Asa is the least-used stop on the Sanyo Shinkansen, a small Kodama-only station in the Sanyo-Onoda area of western Yamaguchi. It was built primarily to serve local commuters and the surrounding towns, and there is little of the sightseeing draw you find at its neighbours. The countryside around it is pleasant — rural Yamaguchi rolling down toward the Inland Sea — but there is no marquee attraction at the station itself.
Only Kodama call here, and for nearly all travelers Asa is a stop to ride straight through. If you find yourself alighting, it is usually for local business or to reach a specific nearby town by car. The honest advice: aim for Shin-Shimonoseki or Shin-Yamaguchi instead, which offer far more in every direction.
Every line has its quietest station, and on the Sanyo it is Asa — a reminder that even Japan’s fastest railway still pauses for the small towns along the way.
