Enoshima Day Trip: Island Shrines, Sea Caves
& Sunset Over the Pacific
60 Min from Shinjuku · Pairs Perfectly with Kamakura · Enoden Tram Connection
From Shinjuku: Odakyu Enoshima Express direct to Katase-Enoshima ~65 min (¥1,120) · Enoshima-Kamakura Free Pass (¥1,640) covers this + unlimited Enoden + Kamakura round-trip — highly recommended
⛩️ Enoshima Shrine Complex
Three shrines ascending through the island from causeway to western cliffs, dedicated to Benzaiten (goddess of music, art, and flowing water — one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods). Approach through Nakamise-dori shopping street selling shirasu in every form. One of Japan’s three great Benzaiten island enshrined since the 12th century.
🕳️ Sea Caves (岩屋)
Two sea caves descending ~150m into volcanic rock — Buddhist statues enshrined inside, candlelit corridors, genuine ancient atmosphere since the 12th century. Accessible by stairway from the western cliffs, with Mt. Fuji views on clear days. One of the most atmospheric experiences on the island.
🌅 Sunset Cafés at Chigogafuchi
The western cliffs are lined with terrace cafés where the standard activity is watching the sun set over the Pacific while eating shirasu dishes and beer. The sunset ritual has become so embedded it’s a distinctive local institution — one of the most relaxed and local eating experiences in Kanagawa.
Combining with Kamakura: The Enoden (江ノ電) tram runs between Enoshima and Kamakura in 25 minutes through residential backyards, cliff edges above the ocean, and Kamakura’s shopping streets. Suggested: Start at Kamakura temples, take Enoden to Enoshima for the afternoon + sunset.
Hotels: Fujita Kanko Hotel Enoshima (Mid-Range / from approx. ¥20,000 ~$133 USD) — beachside across from the causeway. Hotel Monterey Kamakura (from approx. ¥18,000 ~$120 USD).
