🏙️ Atami — Gateway Onsen City

Japan’s most fashionable resort city 1950s–1980s, now revived with younger travelers. MOA Museum of Art on a hilltop with Pacific views (National Treasures collection). Multiple day-use onsen facilities with geothermal springs over 100°C.

🎋 Shuzenji — Mountain Onsen Village

Deep in the Izu mountains: Shuzenji Temple (founded by Kūkai, 807 CE), Katsura River flowing through the center, traditional inns on both banks. The Dokkyō no Yu free outdoor foot bath in the river center is said to have been discovered by Kūkai himself. Natsume Sōseki and Kawabata Yasunari wrote here.

⚓ Shimoda — Black Ships & Black Sand

Where Commodore Perry arrived in 1854 forcing Japan to open after 250 years of isolation. Ryosenji Temple preserves treaty documentation. Shirahama Beach — rare white sand on the usually black-sand Pacific coast — is among the finest beaches in the greater Tokyo region.

🐟 Kinmedai & Fresh Wasabi

Izu’s signature fish — splendid alfonsino, a deep-red deep-water fish on every menu. Eating freshly grated real wasabi alongside Izu sashimi (not the powder substitute) is a revelation only available this close to the wasabi-producing mountain rivers.

Hotels: Shuzenji Onsen Kikaya (Luxury / from approx. ¥40,000/person ~$267 USD) — finest Shuzenji ryokan. Atami Kaihourou (Mid-Range / from approx. ¥22,000/person ~$147 USD) — sea views. Prices approximate with two meals.
