What Kind of Area is Shizukuishi? A Local’s Honest Take

Shizukuishi is a small highland town just west of Morioka, at the foot of the graceful cone of Mt. Iwate — often called the “Fuji of the north.” It is a gateway to some of Iwate’s loveliest countryside: the celebrated Koiwai Farm, a historic dairy estate whose lone cherry tree framed against Mt. Iwate is one of Tohoku’s most photographed scenes; the ski slopes that hosted the 1993 Alpine World Championships; and quiet highland hot springs like Amihari and Tsunagi.

Only some Komachi services stop at Shizukuishi, about 2 hr 40 min from Tokyo (and just 10 minutes from Morioka). There is little at the station itself — it is a base for the farm, the mountain and the onsen rather than a destination in its own right — but the scenery is a real reward.

The “Koiwai ippon-zakura” — a single wild cherry tree standing alone in a green meadow with snow-capped Mt. Iwate behind it — draws photographers from across Japan when it blooms in early May. It is the image of Iwate spring.

Getting Around from Shizukuishi

🚄 Shinkansen

Tokyo ~2 hr 40 min · Morioka ~10 min · Tazawako ~20 min. Some Komachi stop; others pass through.

🚌 To Koiwai Farm & the mountain

Buses and taxis reach Koiwai Farm and the Mt. Iwate foothills; a car helps for the ski resorts and onsen.

♨️ To the onsen

Highland hot springs such as Amihari and Tsunagi lie a short drive away.

What to See Around Shizukuishi

🐄 Koiwai Farm

A historic working dairy farm with pastures, heritage barns, dairy treats and the famous lone cherry tree — a family favourite and a photographer’s pilgrimage.

⛰️ Mt. Iwate

The elegant volcano dominating the skyline, with hiking in summer and a backdrop to the farmland year-round.

⛷️ Skiing & Onsen

The Shizukuishi ski area and nearby hot springs make an easy winter-and-relaxation combination.

Where Should You Actually Stay?

The highland resorts and onsen are the appeal, more than the station.

⛷️ Resort & onsen hotels: Ski and hot-spring hotels in the highlands (including the Shizukuishi resort) offer mountain-view stays.

🏨 Station-area: Minimal — the station is a gateway.

🏰 Morioka base: Morioka, 10 minutes east, offers a full city with far more choice.
