What Kind of Area is Shin-Onomichi? A Local’s Honest Take

Onomichi is a beloved little city where wooded hills tumble down to the Inland Sea, laced with stone stairways, old temples, secondhand bookshops and famous resident cats. It is a nostalgic, artistic place — the setting of classic Ozu films — and, above all, the mainland start of the Shimanami Kaido, a 70 km cycling road that hops island to island across the sea to Shikoku on a chain of graceful bridges, widely rated among the best bike rides in the world.

One honest caveat: the Shin-Onomichi shinkansen station sits up in the hills, away from the waterfront, and only Kodama stop. The atmospheric town centre and the cycle route start at the regular Onomichi Station on the coast, usually reached via a local train (change at Fukuyama or Mihara) or a bus. Plan your route accordingly — but the reward is one of the loveliest towns on the line.

Even if you don’t cycle the whole Shimanami Kaido, rent a bike and ride the first bridge to Mukaishima and back — the moment you roll out over the blue sea on a dedicated cycle path is pure joy.

Getting Around from Shin-Onomichi

🚄 Shinkansen

Shin-Osaka ~1 hr 10 min · Fukuyama ~10 min · Hiroshima ~20 min — Kodama only. The fast trains pass through; many arrive via Fukuyama instead.

🚌 To the waterfront & cycle start

A bus or local train links the hilltop shinkansen station to the coastal Onomichi Station, the temple walk and the Shimanami Kaido bike terminal.

🚴 The Shimanami Kaido

Rental cycles at the port let you ride the island bridges toward Imabari on Shikoku, with pickup points along the way.

What to See Around Shin-Onomichi

⛩️ The Temple Walk & Cat Alley

A hillside trail linking 25 temples, with the Senkoji ropeway, viewpoints over the strait, and the famous cat-filled “Cat Alley.”

🚴 Shimanami Kaido

The island-hopping cycle road across the Inland Sea — bridges, citrus groves and sea views all the way to Shikoku.

🍊 Setoda & Ikuchijima

An island on the route famous for lemons, the flamboyant Kosanji temple and a marble viewpoint — a lovely day out.

Where Should You Actually Stay?

Stay down by the water in Onomichi, not up at the shinkansen station.

🌃 Waterfront Onomichi: Stylish conversions like the cyclist-friendly harbour hotels and hillside guesthouses put you in the heart of the town.

🚴 Cyclist stays: Bike-in hotels near the port are built for Shimanami riders, with storage and early breakfasts.

🏨 Shin-Onomichi: Minimal — the hilltop station is for catching a Kodama, not for sleeping beside.
