What Kind of Area is Ureshino-Onsen? A Local’s Honest Take

Ureshino got its first-ever railway station when the shinkansen opened in 2022 — and it was well worth the wait, because Ureshino is one of the loveliest small onsen towns in Kyushu. Its silky, sodium-bicarbonate waters are famous as a “bihada no yu” — a skin-beautifying bath — counted among Japan’s three great beauty hot springs, which leave the skin noticeably smooth. The same soft climate makes Ureshino a renowned green-tea town, producing a distinctive rounded “tamaryokucha,” and the town pairs its baths with tea houses, a riverside setting and the nearby Todoroki Falls.

Kamome services stop here, 25 minutes from Nagasaki and about 70 from Hakata with the smooth Takeo-Onsen transfer. It is a place to slow down, soak and sip — one of the most rewarding overnight stops on the whole line.

Try Ureshino’s signature “onsen-yudofu” — tofu simmered in the alkaline hot-spring water until it turns meltingly soft and faintly sweet. Paired with local tea after a bath, it is the essence of the town.
