Sasebo is Japan with a US Navy accent: a fleet town since 1889 whose harbour still hosts grey hulls, and whose signature dish — the Sasebo burger, handmade, bacon-and-egg-stacked, invented for homesick sailors in the 1950s — is now a civic religion with an official map of certified shops. Downtown centres on the Sanka-cho arcades, Japan’s longest straight covered run, ending near a port promenade where the JR line’s westernmost station sign makes its little claim to fame.
The scenery, though, is the reason to sleep over. West of town spreads Kujukushima — “ninety-nine islands,” actually 208 — a drowned coastline of pine-capped islets best seen from the Pearl Sea Resort’s cruise boats or, better, the hilltop Tenkaiho lookout at sunset, when the sea turns to hammered gold around the silhouettes. Twenty minutes east sits Huis Ten Bosch, the vast Dutch-city theme park of canals, tulips and winter illuminations. With Nagasaki ~90 minutes and the retro Matsuura Railway looping the peninsula, Sasebo makes a genuinely varied two-night base at navy-town prices.
Time Tenkaiho for the hour before sunset, then descend for a burger dinner — the certified shops grill to order, so queue early or phone ahead; the classics sell out of bacon-egg by night’s end.
