What Kind of Area is Sakudaira? A Local’s Honest Take
Sakudaira is a modern junction station in the wide, sunny Saku valley of eastern Nagano — a place defined by its remarkable climate. This corner of the highlands enjoys some of the most sunshine hours and least rainfall in Japan, which makes it a centre for ballooning, stargazing and healthy mountain living. The station is the transfer point between the shinkansen and the local Koumi line that climbs toward the Yatsugatake mountains.
It is not a sightseeing town in itself — the surroundings are farmland, retail and residential — but it is a genuinely useful base for the Yatsugatake highlands, the Koumi line’s alpine scenery, and a quieter, cheaper alternative to nearby Karuizawa. Asama and Hakutaka stop, with Tokyo about 75 minutes away.
The Saku valley’s clear, dry air is why hot-air balloons drift over it and observatories dot the hills. If your dates match the balloon festival, dawn over the rice fields with dozens of balloons rising is unexpectedly magical.
