What Kind of Area is Echizen-Takefu? A Local’s Honest Take

Echizen-Takefu is a brand-new station — built for the March 2024 extension — serving the craft heartland of Fukui. This corner of the prefecture (Echizen City and the surrounding towns) is one of Japan’s great traditional-craft clusters: Echizen forged knives, prized by chefs worldwide; Echizen washi, handmade paper with a 1,500-year history; Echizen lacquerware; and Echizen pottery, one of Japan’s six ancient kilns. It is also serious soba country, home of the radish-topped Echizen oroshi-soba.

Hakutaka and Tsurugi services stop here, about three hours from Tokyo. The station sits a little apart from the old Takefu town centre and the craft villages, which spread through the surrounding countryside. This is a special-interest stop — quietly wonderful for anyone who loves craft, cooking or how beautiful everyday things are made.

At the Takefu Knife Village you can watch smiths forge blades by hand and buy directly from the makers — a natural pilgrimage for cooks, and a perfect companion to our guide on souvenirs worth carrying home.
