Ancient Temple, Eel Restaurants & Old Town
Naritasan Shinshoji · Japan’s Best Eel Street · 20 Minutes from the Terminal
From Narita Airport: JR Narita Line ~20 min to Narita Station · From Tokyo Station: ~60 min. Best: Spring (cherry blossom at temple) and autumn. Perfect for airport layovers.
⛩️ Naritasan Shinshoji Temple
10+ million visitors annually — Japan’s second most-visited religious site. Founded 940 CE, dedicated to Fudō Myō-ō. Large complex: main hall, pagodas, the Great Peace Pagoda, Japanese garden. The goma ceremony (ritual fire burning, performed multiple times daily) is one of the most powerful Buddhist ritual experiences available to visitors near Tokyo.
🐟 Omotesando Eel Restaurants
800-meter approach street lined with traditional shops and some of Japan’s finest eel (unagi) restaurants — a culinary heritage developed to feed Edo-period pilgrims. Kikuya (菊屋): 300+ years of operation, Japan’s oldest eel restaurant, the building itself a cultural artifact. Kawatoyo (川豊): Famous for theatrical live eel preparation visible through the window — a Narita institution.
