What Kind of Area is Tazawako? A Local’s Honest Take
Tazawako is the gateway to one of Tohoku’s most beautiful corners. Lake Tazawa is the deepest lake in Japan — 423 metres — and its great depth gives it an astonishing cobalt-blue colour, ringed by mountains and dotted with legends, most famously the golden statue of Tatsuko, a maiden said to have become the lake’s dragon guardian. Up in the mountains above the lake lies Nyuto Onsen, a cluster of seven remote hot springs whose milky, sulphurous waters and rustic wooden bathhouses — above all the beloved Tsurunoyu — are among the most atmospheric in all of Japan.
The Komachi reaches Tazawako in about 2 hr 45 min from Tokyo. The station sits a little away from the lake and the onsen, with buses connecting; but the effort is richly repaid. This is a place to slow down, soak and take in the scenery.
Tsurunoyu, the oldest inn at Nyuto Onsen, is the picture of a secret hot spring: thatched roofs, a milky open-air bath steaming in the forest, and, in winter, snow piled high around the pools. It is worth planning a whole trip around.
