What Kind of Area is Shinjo? A Local’s Honest Take

Shinjo is the northern terminus of the Yamagata Shinkansen and a hub for the wider Mogami region — a friendly, snowy town that comes into its own each summer for its festival. The Shinjo Matsuri, held in late August, parades a series of exquisitely detailed floats (yatai) depicting scenes from history and legend, and is inscribed on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. Shinjo is also the springboard for one of Tohoku’s classic experiences: the Mogami River boat cruise, a relaxing float down a green gorge with boatmen singing traditional river songs.

The Tsubasa reaches Shinjo in about 3 hr 07 min from Tokyo. From here the rails continue as conventional lines to the Shonai coast — Sakata, the sacred mountains of Dewa Sanzan and the Sea of Japan — so Shinjo works both as a destination and as a gateway deeper into northern Tohoku.

Take the Mogami River cruise from nearby Furukuchi: an hour drifting through a forested gorge past waterfalls, with a boatman singing the haunting “Mogamigawa Funauta” — a river song echoing off the cliffs. It is pure, timeless Tohoku.
