Sakurambo-Higashine Station Guide: The Cherry Capital of Japan —
A Station Named for the Fruit

A Tsubasa Stop · Japan’s No.1 Cherry Producer · Fruit-Picking, Airport Access & a Hot Spring

🍒 Higashine — Japan’s top producer of sakuranbo cherries

✈️ The closest station to Yamagata Airport

♨️ Higashine Onsen and orchard country

What Kind of Area is Sakurambo-Higashine? A Local’s Honest Take

This station wears its identity in its name: sakuranbo means cherry, and Higashine is Japan’s number-one producer of cherries — the plump, prized Sato Nishiki variety was perfected here. In early summer the orchards around the town turn red with fruit, and cherry-picking is the headline experience; the rest of the year brings peaches, grapes, apples and La France pears in turn. Practically, the station is also the closest shinkansen stop to Yamagata Airport, making it a handy entry or exit point, and the town has its own comfortable Higashine Onsen.

The Tsubasa reaches Sakurambo-Higashine in about 2 hr 40 min from Tokyo, 15 minutes north of Yamagata city. It is a friendly, fruit-focused stop — at its best in cherry season — rather than a big sightseeing base.

Time a June visit for all-you-can-pick cherries straight from the tree — the sweet, glossy Sato Nishiki are a completely different thing eaten warm in the orchard than boxed in a shop, and Higashine is the best place in Japan to do it.
