Tendo is a delightful small city with a singular claim to fame: it makes the overwhelming majority — around 95% — of Japan’s shogi (Japanese chess) pieces, a craft it has honed since the 19th century. Shogi motifs are everywhere, from giant piece-shaped monuments to workshops where you can watch artisans brush the characters by hand. Each April the town stages its famous Human Shogi event, in which costumed people act as living pieces on a giant board beneath the cherry blossoms of Maizuru Park.
