What Kind of Area is Yamagata? A Local’s Honest Take
Yamagata is the friendly prefectural capital and the natural base for the Tsubasa line — an unpretentious city ringed by mountains and orchards, with two outstanding day trips on its doorstep. To the east rises Mt. Zao, whose ski slopes are famous for the eerie frost-caked trees known as “snow monsters” (juhyo) and whose summer crater lake glows an unearthly emerald. To the northeast stands Yamadera (Risshaku-ji), a temple of halls scattered up a forested cliff, where the poet Basho wrote one of his most famous haiku about the stillness and the cicadas.
The Tsubasa reaches Yamagata in about 2 hr 22 min from Tokyo. The city itself offers a castle park, good soba and imoni (a beloved local taro stew), and each August the Hanagasa Festival fills the streets with flower-hatted dancers. It is the essential hub for exploring the region.
Climb the 1,000-odd stone steps of Yamadera through the cedars to the Godaido hall, perched over the valley — the view, and the silence Basho wrote about, are as moving now as they were three centuries ago.
