What Kind of Area is Yonezawa? A Local’s Honest Take

Yonezawa is the first Yamagata stop on the Tsubasa and one of its most rewarding — a proud castle town wrapped in samurai history and famous, above all, for its beef. Yonezawa beef ranks alongside Kobe and Matsusaka among Japan’s three great wagyu, prized for its fine marbling, and eating it here — as steak, sukiyaki or a humble beef-don — is reason enough to stop. The town was ruled by the Uesugi clan, and the legacy of the reformer-lord Uesugi Yozan still shapes its identity; the Uesugi Shrine and museum tell the story, and each February the Uesugi Snow Lantern Festival fills the castle grounds with candlelit snow lanterns.

The Tsubasa reaches Yonezawa in about two hours from Tokyo. It makes a satisfying overnight for food and history lovers, and a gateway to the surrounding Okitama region’s onsen and silk-weaving tradition.

Yonezawa beef is the obvious splurge — but locals also swear by the cheaper “gyu-don” and beef ramen around the station, letting you taste the same famous wagyu without the steakhouse bill.
