What Kind of Area is Okayama? A Local’s Honest Take
Okayama is a sunny, easygoing regional capital that punches above its weight as a travel hub. It holds Korakuen, counted among Japan’s three greatest gardens, paired with the striking black-lacquered “Crow Castle” across the river. Just as importantly, it is a crossroads: the shinkansen meets the line to Shikoku here, crossing the Inland Sea on the great Seto Ohashi bridge, and the pretty canal town of Kurashiki is a short hop away. The city is also wrapped in the Momotaro (Peach Boy) legend, which you will meet everywhere from statues to sweets.
Every Nozomi, Mizuho and Sakura stops at Okayama, 45 minutes from Shin-Osaka. It makes an excellent central base for the whole region — garden and castle in the city, Kurashiki and the Kibi bike route nearby, and Shikoku within reach.
Rent a bicycle for the Kibi Plain cycle route just west of the city — a flat, well-marked path linking ancient shrines, burial mounds and rice fields, one of the most pleasant half-day rides in western Japan.
