What Kind of Area is Komatsu? A Local’s Honest Take
Komatsu is an Ishikawa city best known for two things far apart in spirit: it gives its name to the global construction-machinery giant born here, and it is home to Komatsu Airport, the main air gateway to the whole Hokuriku region. It gained its own shinkansen stop in the March 2024 extension. Beyond industry and aviation, Komatsu holds real cultural depth — the Ataka Barrier on its coast is the setting of Kanjincho, one of the most famous kabuki plays — and it sits beside some of Japan’s loveliest hot springs.
Hakutaka and Tsurugi services stop here (not the Kagayaki), about 160 minutes from Tokyo. For most travelers Komatsu is a practical hub — an airport connection or a jumping-off point for the Kaga onsen and the cliff temple of Natadera — rather than a sightseeing base in itself.
Natadera, a short trip from the city, is one of the region’s most atmospheric temples: halls and pagodas set among caves and moss-covered volcanic cliffs, especially beautiful in autumn.
