What Kind of Area is Jomo-Kogen? A Local’s Honest Take
Jomo-Kogen is a mountain gateway station, dropped among the fields and hills of northern Gunma to serve the Minakami hot-spring region. There is very little at the station itself — a forecourt, a bus stop, a car park — but what lies beyond it is one of the best adventure-and-onsen playgrounds within easy reach of Tokyo. Tanigawa and some Toki stop here, about 70 minutes out.
This is where Tokyoites come to raft the Tone River in summer, soak in riverside rotenburo in autumn, and ski in winter. The town of Minakami spreads across a cluster of onsen hamlets up the valley, so the station is purely a way in — you will take a bus or a rental car onward to wherever you are staying.
Two local legends are worth the detour: Takaragawa Onsen, with vast riverside mixed-bathing pools among the trees, and Doai Station nearby — the “mole station” whose Joetsu-line platform lies 70 metres underground at the foot of nearly 500 steps.
