Three Stores, Three Philosophies
Tokyo’s stationery scene concentrates into three institutions, and they are not interchangeable. Knowing which does what saves you hours — or, more honestly, lets you spend those hours deliberately.
🏛️ Itoya (Ginza) — The Cathedral
Twelve narrow red-paperclip-branded floors since 1904: a floor for letters, a floor for fountain pens with a nib counter, craft paper sold by the sheet like fabric, and a café up top growing its own lettuce (Ginza is like this). Itoya is where stationery is treated as a life discipline. Buy: fountain pens, letter paper, the house-brand Color Chart goods, wedding-grade cards. Budget: an hour minimum; the annex K.Itoya behind handles the workhorse stock.
🎨 Loft — The Trend Floor
The yellow-and-black lifestyle chain (Shibuya flagship) is where new stationery happens: seasonal pen drops, character collabs, sticker walls, the diary festival each autumn when Japan buys next year’s planner. Buy: gel pens, stickers, masking tape, Hobonichi accessories, gifts under ¥1,500. It’s also the answer to “where do I buy souvenirs for a teenager.”
🔨 Hands — The Engineer’s Answer
Formerly Tokyu Hands: part stationery store, part hardware, part hobbyist fever dream (Shibuya/Shinjuku flagships). Buy: technical pens, leather-craft supplies, label makers, travel gear, and the deeply Japanese category of “problems you didn’t know had solutions.” The stationery floors are excellent and calmer than Loft’s.
The Sane Route
Do one flagship properly rather than all three quickly: Itoya for elegance, Loft for fun, Hands for function. Pair with the neighborhood: Itoya folds into a Ginza afternoon, Loft/Hands into Shibuya — and if you’re near Tokyo Station, Maruzen’s stationery floor quietly rivals them all. Tax-free counters exist at all flagships (¥5,000 minimum, passport).
